Sattvavajaya Chikitsa - Victory over the mind or self-control.

The term Sattvavajaya literally means “victory over the mind.” It refers to therapeutic methods that help a person withdraw the mind from harmful thoughts, emotions, and desires, and redirect it toward healthy and positive thinking. According to Ayurveda, disturbances of the mind, such as excessive desire, anger, fear, grief, or attachment, can lead to mental and even physical illness. Sattvavajaya Chikitsa aims to correct these disturbances by improving mental discipline and emotional stability.
Sattvavajaya Chikitsa is a distinct non-pharmacological psychological therapy in Ayurveda that aims to strengthen the mind (Sattva) through the regulation and control of mental activities while reducing the influence of negative mental qualities such as Rajas and Tamas. It emphasizes guiding the mind away from harmful desires and cultivating mental stability. This approach helps manage mental and psychosomatic conditions through methods like counselling, mindfulness, and sometimes by introducing opposing emotional states to counteract unhealthy thoughts.
The classical explanation given in the Charaka Samhita describes Sattvavajaya as “restraining the mind from unwholesome objects.” This therapy works through various psychological techniques, including counselling, reassurance, replacement of negative emotions, improving memory and knowledge, and strengthening willpower. Patients are encouraged to develop self-control, cultivate positive habits, and maintain a balanced mental state.
In modern terms, Sattvavajaya Chikitsa can be compared to psychotherapy, counselling, and cognitive behavioral approaches, as it focuses on changing unhealthy mental patterns. By strengthening sattva (clarity and purity of mind), this therapy promotes mental health, emotional resilience, and overall well-being. Thus, Sattvavajaya Chikitsa represents Ayurveda’s holistic psychological approach, emphasizing that mental discipline, positive thinking, and self-awareness are essential for both mental and physical health.
Sattvavajaya Chikitsa is often considered conceptually similar to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, although they come from very different historical and theoretical backgrounds. Ayurveda described Sattvavajaya thousands of years ago, while CBT was developed in the 20th century by psychologists like Aaron T. Beck.
